ECCA2023 will be held in Dublin in June, when climate adaptation practitioners will meet climate scientists face-to-face on a European scale for the first time in four years.
A fresh approach is being taken to building the programme in response to demand for expert brokerage between those responsible for implementing climate adaptation measures and the scientists behind cutting-edge research and innovation climate services.
ECCA2023 is being organised by a European-wide collaboration led by influential actors JPI Climate and climate project, MAGICA, supported by the European Commission. It will be held at Dublin Castle from June 19-21, 2023, showcasing real-world examples of adaptation measures around state-of-the-art science and research for a climate resilient Europe.
The aim will be to inspire climate consultants, climate services developers and policy deliverers at transnational, national, regional, municipal and community levels to confidently implement effective measures to adapt to the changing climate, especially in the face of increasingly frequent extreme weather events such as flooding, heatwaves and wildfire.
A fresh blend of solution-driven programme events will facilitate face-to-face conversations, informal and formal knowledge exchange and network-building with a lively ECCA Piazza, booths and pitching spaces as well as formal presentation rooms.
Giulia Galluccio leads MAGICA and is based at CMCC Foundation (Information Systems for Climate Science and Decision Making Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici) in Italy. She says: “MAGICA will organise two ECCA conferences - next year and in 2025 - in crucial times for Europe. Climate changes are expected to increasingly affect our communities and will force all of us - including business - to reaffirm our guiding principles, reconfirming our mission and priorities to seriously and actively contribute to the lifestyle change required of us and above all to set the right example and tools for future generations.
“We really hope that the ECCA23 seminars, workshops and informal exchange will provide evidence on the latest scientific achievements, while also providing knowledge based on innovative experience. Our aim is to increase accessibility of climate adaptation measures informed by science for everyone who takes part.”
Attendees will be:
· Adaptation experts
· Policy-makers
· Local authorities
· Practitioners in climate risks management
· The private sector and businesses already engaged with and taking action on climate risk
· Investors
· NGOs
· Citizen organisations & community groups engaged in adaptation and committed to local climate action
· Youth and education organisations
· Climate communicators
· European scientists.
Practitioners will learn how and where to source trusted climate information to effectively implement successful climate adaptation actions. They will benefit from hearing practical information about current adaptation measures and they will leave the conference having expanded their network of fellow practitioners across the European regions for mutual knowledge sharing and support.
In this way ECCA2023 organisers JPI Climate/MAGICA will contribute to a growing Europe-wide community of practice.
Proposals for examples of adaptation action demonstrating effectiveness and good practice to showcase at ECCA 2023 will be invited later this year and registration is due to open early in spring 2023 – keep watching this website and our online platforms. More about MAGICA (Maximising the synergy of European research governance and innovation for climate action):
MAGICA aims to accelerate the development, provision and exchange of knowledge from research and innovation to inform and support policy-making and climate actions. It will do this via improved coordination of on-going and future climate initiatives at transnational, national, regional and municipal levels and more efficient use of resources. MAGICA is a 4-year transnational project launched in June 2022, funded by Horizon EU and is the Coordination and Support Action (CSA) for JPI Climate. It involves 24 organisations from 13 countries. Among its extensive outreach and engagement activities, MAGICA will stage key European climate events including ECCA 2023 and ECCA 2025.
